Six Home Improvement Projects for Elderly-Friendly Homes

six home improvement projects for elderly friendly homes

If you have a family member that can no longer stay in a home by themselves, you may consider having them move in with you. However, you will need to make some changes to your home to make it more suitable for older adults. These changes will help ensure that your loved ones are safe and comfortable in their new home. Here are five projects to prepare your home for an elderly family member:

Doorknobs

One of the simplest and least expensive projects is to switch your doorknobs to lever-style ones. Traditional doorknobs can be hard to grip and turn for older people, especially if they have joint pain or arthritis.

Remote-Controlled Blinds

Seniors may have trouble using blinds, causing frustration. You can make things easier by ordering remote-controlled blinds to be installed. While they are pricey, operating the blinds is a very smooth process.

Modern Windows

Due to arthritic joints and other ailments, drafty rooms with climate control issues are problematic for the elderly. Replacing windows to better control temperature will be a much-appreciated upgrade. Additionally, just the process of opening and closing stiff, old windows is hard for many, so new windows and casings will enable easier function as well.

Walk-In Bathtub

A standard can be dangerous for the elderly due to the risk of falling and getting injured. With a walk-in bathtub, users can comfortably walk in and sit down while they wait for the tub to fill. These types of tubs also come with buttons or easy-to-turn knobs so your family member can operate the tub on their own.

Make Doorways Wider

If your family member needs a wheelchair to move around, the doors need to be wider to allow them access to rooms. The cost varies depending on if there is any wiring that needs to be moved or how wide the door needs to be. Before you hire a contractor, measure the width of each door to see if they are wide enough for your family member’s wheelchair or walker.

Monitoring Service

This project offers more peace of mind rather than accessibility. Home security and alarm systems are beginning to add a monitoring service for seniors at home. The system places sensors around the home to track a person’s movements. If you notice that a family member has been in an area for an unusual amount of time, you can check on them.

TV Hearing Devices

With age often comes compromised hearing. If you don’t want to hear the TV at max volume from across the house, consider buying a TV hearing device that will enable your elderly companion to independently control their own earbud volume.

When an elderly family member moves to your home, they will enjoy the extra company, and you will have some peace of mind knowing that you are close by to help if anything goes wrong. While some of these projects are costly, they help create a more comfortable and safe home for your senior family member. They will appreciate the thought you put into making them feel welcome in their new home.
