Up: What Is Recyclable and What Is Not

April 6, 2022 by TJ Leave a Comment

up what is recyclable and what is not

With the advent of recycling, countries are employing various methods to make new products from plastics, metals, glass, and other recyclables. As a conscientious citizen who wants to help the environment, you should know more about recycling. Learn what you can recycle and what items you should discard properly.

What you can recycle

Recyclables could be glass, plastic water bottles, paper, aluminum, and metal scraps. You can also recycle electronics such as computers, batteries, keyboards, cellular phones, etc. Rubber, plastic products, cables, wires, wood, and textile are also recyclable materials. If you have old appliances, furniture, and other items with metal parts, consider getting in touch with a trusted scrap metal Kansas City scrap yard or recycling facility to dispose of the things you do not need which occupy valuable storage space in your home.

What you cannot recycle

So many items are not recyclable. These items include plastic shopping bags, takeaway coffee cups, garden waste, disposable diapers, light bulbs, ovenware, ceramics, oils, medical wastes and syringes, foam, and bubble wrap.

You cannot recycle all plastic items

You probably heard that you could recycle plastics. What you should know is that not every plastic item is recyclable. The most recycled plastic products are PET bottles, PVCs, and HDPE plastic containers of detergents, household cleaners, motor oils, etc. Recycling facilities will not accept tarps, lawn edging, blister packs, and plastic wraps.

Clean the items for recycling

It is essential to ensure that the materials for recycling are clean. Some peanut butter left in a jar, for example, is enough to contaminate a ton of paper. Wash and rinse the containers and ensure no food particles are left. Sending clean recyclables to the recycling facility helps speed up the process. Do not include oil-and condiment-soaked food containers in your recyclable bin, such as pizza boxes.

Know what to put in the recycling bins

In most communities, you will find blue bins for recycling. Green is for yard waste, and black is for trash. Use the blue bins for paper, cardboard, milk and juice cartons (clean), brown, clear, and green glass jars and bottles (rinsed), empty aerosols, steel, tin, and aluminum cans. You can recycle hard plastic bottles and containers, but not plastic lids.

What to do with batteries

Most people do not know what to do with dead batteries. You can dispose of ordinary batteries in the trash. But, you should know that you could only do this for carbon-zinc, manganese, and regular alkaline batteries. Rechargeable batteries, such as the button and lithium batteries, are recyclable, although a specific facility handles these batteries. You can either take the batteries to the drop-off location in your county or city or coordinate with your local health department or waste disposal district.

Keep in mind that not everything is recyclable. Know the difference so you can separate the items. Donate appliances, clothes, furniture, etc., that are still serviceable to organizations that accept them. Ensure that you also know the proper way of disposing trash and other waste materials.
